Heating and cooling in Santa Clarita
Santa Clarita is a city of four main communities — Valencia, Saugus, Newhall and Canyon Country — spread across a valley ringed by the San Gabriel Mountains, the Santa Susana Mountains and the Sierra Pelona. The Santa Clara River runs through the middle of it, and I-5 and SR-14 meet at the Newhall Pass on its southern edge. That geography shapes how homes here heat and cool: the valley floor holds summer heat, and the canyons around it funnel wind and, some years, wildfire smoke into neighborhoods.
Summer in the Santa Clarita Valley regularly runs past 100°F, so an air conditioner that struggles in June will struggle more in August. Long afternoons at full load are when worn capacitors, tired fan motors and dirty outdoor coils finally give out. Winter is the other half of the story: nights drop into the 30s, and a furnace or heat pump that sat idle since spring has to come back on reliably.
Much of the city was built from the 1960s onward as tract and planned neighborhoods, many of them two-story homes with the air handler and ducts in the attic or a garage closet. Attics here get very hot in summer, which is hard on ducts, insulation and any equipment installed up there. Where systems have been replaced piecemeal over the years — a new condenser on an old coil, new ducts spliced into old ones — mismatches are a common reason the house never quite cools.
Santa Clarita homes get electricity from Southern California Edison and natural gas from SoCalGas, so most pair a central air conditioner with a gas furnace, and heat pumps are increasingly common. We work on all of them.

01Local issues
Common HVAC issues in Santa Clarita
AC losing ground on 100°F afternoons
Well over 100 outside, a system that is low on refrigerant, has a failing capacitor or a clogged coil runs all day and still falls behind. We check charge, electrical parts and airflow before suggesting anything bigger.
Santa Ana dust in filters and coils
Fall and winter winds blow dust and debris down the valley. Filters clog faster and outdoor coils get coated, which cuts airflow and makes everything work harder. In windy months, check the filter more often.
Wildfire smoke getting inside
When fires burn in the hills around the valley, smoke settles over it for days. Return ducts that leak in the attic or garage pull that air into the house; a sealed duct system and a better filter keep more of it out.
Upstairs bedrooms that stay hot
Two-story homes are the norm in much of the city, and the upstairs often runs several degrees warmer. Leaky or undersized attic ducts, weak return airflow and a thermostat downstairs are the usual causes, and each has its own fix.
Furnace that fails on the first cold night
A furnace idle since spring may have a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter or a blocked filter. A check in the fall, before the 30-degree nights, catches most of these.

FAQQuestions
Santa Clarita questions,answered.
Still not sure what’s going on? Call and describe it — we’ll tell you what we’d check first.
(323) 631-8683Do you serve all of Santa Clarita?
Yes. We work across the City of Santa Clarita — Valencia, Saugus, Newhall and Canyon Country — and nearby communities such as Stevenson Ranch, Castaic and Agua Dulce. The full list is on our service area page.
How often should I change the filter during Santa Ana season?
Check it monthly while the winds are blowing and replace it as soon as it looks gray, even if the package promises longer. A clogged filter cuts airflow, which can freeze the coil in summer and overheat the furnace in winter.
Should I repair or replace an older air conditioner here?
It depends on what failed and on the condition of the rest of the system. We diagnose it, explain what the repair involves and give you the price in writing, so you decide with the facts in front of you. If replacing makes more sense, we’ll say why.
Can you help keep smoke and dust out of the house?
Yes. We look at filtration, return ducts and leaks, and can fit higher-grade filters, air cleaners or UV lights. Our indoor air quality page explains the options.
