Heating and cooling in Canyon Country

Canyon Country is the eastern side of the Santa Clarita Valley, stretching along SR-14, Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway. It reaches up into Sand Canyon and Fair Oaks Ranch; beyond lie unincorporated areas such as Mint Canyon, and further up the 14 is Agua Dulce, home of Vasquez Rocks.

The terrain is hillier and more open than the west side of the valley. Homes range from tract neighborhoods, condos and apartments along Soledad Canyon Road to hillside houses and ranch properties on larger lots in Sand Canyon and the canyons past it, many with horses and open land around them.

Open land means dust, dry brush and pollen, and the canyons channel the Santa Ana winds. Filters load up fast, outdoor coils get coated, and on windy days grit finds every gap in a house. Brush-covered hills also mean smoke reaches these neighborhoods in fire season, so keeping outside air out matters as much as cooling.

Summers on the east side are hot and long, and air conditioners carry a heavy load. Larger homes on bigger lots often have long duct runs or more than one system, each needing its own attention.

Do you cover Sand Canyon, Mint Canyon and Agua Dulce?

Yes. Our area includes Canyon Country, Sand Canyon, Fair Oaks Ranch, Mint Canyon and Agua Dulce. If you aren’t sure whether your road is covered, call and ask.

Which filter is best for dust and pollen?

A higher-grade pleated filter catches more fine dust and pollen, but one that is too restrictive starves the system of air. We’ll suggest one your equipment can handle, or a separate air cleaner if you need more.

How do I keep wildfire smoke out of the house?

Close windows and doors, let the system recirculate through a good filter, and make sure the return ducts aren’t drawing air from the attic or garage. We can test the ducts for leaks and add filtration or an air cleaner.

Should I clean around the outdoor unit after a windstorm?

Yes. Switch the system off at the thermostat, clear debris from around the unit and rinse the coil gently from outside. If the fan won’t start or the coil is packed solid, call us.

Do larger homes here need more than one system?

Some do. A big single-story house, or one with a large addition, may have two systems or a duct layout too long for one unit to serve well. We look at how the house is laid out and how each system performs before suggesting any change.
