Heating and cooling in Newhall
Newhall is the oldest community in Santa Clarita, named for Henry Mayo Newhall, whose land company shaped much of the valley. Its historic core is Old Town Newhall along Main Street, close to William S. Hart Park, and its neighborhoods spread toward Placerita Canyon and the hills by the Newhall Pass, where I-5 and SR-14 come together.
That history shows in the houses. Newhall has a wider spread of home ages than most of Santa Clarita: older houses near Old Town, mid-century streets, and newer tracts on the hillsides. In older homes, heat may come from a wall or floor furnace, or from a forced-air furnace in a hall closet or garage that was added long after the house was built. Ductwork has often been patched, extended and rerouted as rooms were added.
So diagnosis matters more than usual. A cold bedroom may be a duct that came loose in a crawlspace or attic rather than a weak furnace; an air conditioner that keeps switching on and off may be an old indoor coil paired with a newer outdoor unit. We trace the problem to its cause before quoting anything.
Sitting low by the pass and the canyons, Newhall gets the valley’s summer heat, cold winter nights and gusty Santa Ana winds. Leaves and grit pile up around outdoor units, and older homes with gaps around doors, windows and ducts let more of that dust inside.

Common HVAC issues in Newhall
Aging wall and floor furnaces
Some older Newhall homes still heat with a wall or floor furnace. Burners, the pilot or igniter and the vent all need to be in good shape; rust, soot or a yellow flame mean it should be looked at before winter.
Patched and extended ductwork
Additions and remodels often mean new runs spliced onto old ones. Disconnected or crushed sections leave the far rooms cold in winter and warm in summer.
Old and new equipment mismatched
A new outdoor unit on an old indoor coil, or a replacement furnace on undersized ducts, can short-cycle, ice up or never reach the set temperature.
Leaf litter around the condenser
Mature trees and canyon wind fill the space around outdoor units with leaves and grit. A blocked coil loses capacity on the hottest days; keep a couple of feet clear on every side.
Closet and garage furnaces short of air
Furnaces in tight closets or busy garages need room to breathe and to be serviced. Boxes stacked against the unit or a blocked return grille lead to overheating and shutdowns.

Still not sure what’s going on? Call and describe it — we’ll tell you what we’d check first.
(323) 631-8683Do you work on older homes near Old Town Newhall?
Yes. We work on older systems as well as new ones, including closet and garage furnaces and ductwork that has been changed many times. The first step is always finding what is actually wrong.
My house has had several additions. Why are some rooms always uncomfortable?
Additions are often tied into ducts sized for the original house, so the far rooms get too little air, and leaks or loose runs make it worse. We check the airflow to each room and tell you what it would take to fix.
Is Placerita Canyon in your service area?
Yes. Newhall, including the neighborhoods toward Placerita Canyon and around Old Town, is inside our service area, with Valencia, Saugus and Canyon Country close by.
We replaced the AC, but the house still isn’t cool. Why?
In older homes a new outdoor unit is sometimes paired with an old indoor coil or with ducts that were never sized for it. Low refrigerant, a dirty coil or restricted airflow are other usual suspects. We test the whole system, not just the part that was replaced.
